Privacy Policy
Starshot Genesis is published by Happy Robot Shop. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share information through starshotgenesis.com, the browser/development game builds, leaderboard and authentication APIs, multiplayer WebSocket services, and related marketing pages. Steam purchases and Steam account data are governed by Valve / Steam policies in addition to any information Happy Robot Shop receives as a publisher.

1. Information We Collect
a. Game Accounts
When you create or sign in to a Starshot Genesis web/game account, we collect username, password hash, account creation time, and authentication tokens (such as JWTs) needed to keep you signed in for scores and multiplayer. We do not intend to store plain-text passwords on our servers.
b. Scores, Sessions, and Anti-Cheat Signals
We collect gameplay scores, duration, kills, and related score-session metadata used to operate the leaderboard and reduce abusive or invalid submissions.
c. Multiplayer Data
If you join multiplayer, we process in-session data such as your username, ship position and velocity, combat events, and room membership so other participants in the same session can see and interact with your ship. Multiplayer room state is typically held in memory for the active session.
d. Technical and Security Data
We may collect IP address, user agent, timestamps, rate-limit counters, request logs, and diagnostic events to protect the service, enforce abuse limits, and operate hosting infrastructure.
e. Browser Local Storage
The browser game may store data on your device, including last username, username history, game settings, cached leaderboard snapshots, pending score queues, and temporary offline account-retry queues. Offline retry queues may temporarily retain credentials on your device until signup can complete; clear site data if you use a shared device.
f. Marketing Site Data
The marketing site may load self-hosted fonts and media, YouTube embeds, and standard server logs. We do not currently use third-party advertising analytics SDKs on starshotgenesis.com.
2. How We Use Information
- Create and authenticate game accounts
- Operate leaderboards and multiplayer sessions
- Prevent cheating, spam, and abuse
- Debug, secure, and improve the game and websites
- Comply with law and enforce our Terms
3. Sharing and Service Providers
We share information only as needed to operate Starshot Genesis, including:
- Hosting, reverse-proxy, TLS, and infrastructure providers
- Other multiplayer participants (usernames and in-session gameplay state)
- Public leaderboard visitors (usernames and scores)
- YouTube, if you play embedded marketing videos
- Valve / Steam, for storefront distribution and purchases (subject to Steam policies)
- Legal, safety, or business-transfer disclosures where required
We do not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA/CPRA.
4. Music and Third-Party Content
In-game music includes tracks licensed through Epidemic Sound (including Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen / Torque) and custom sound design. Attribution appears on the marketing site and game credits. Epidemic Sound licensing does not grant you rights to extract or redistribute soundtrack assets outside authorized gameplay.
5. Cookies and Similar Technologies
We use browser storage and authentication tokens as described above. Third-party embeds such as YouTube may set their own cookies. We do not use advertising cookies on the Starshot Genesis marketing site.
6. Retention
Accounts, scores, and security logs are retained while needed to operate the game, maintain leaderboards, investigate abuse, and comply with law. You may request deletion of your account data as described below; published historical leaderboard entries may be anonymized or removed where feasible.
7. Security
We use reasonable safeguards such as HTTPS, password hashing, rate limiting, and security headers. No online service is perfectly secure. You are responsible for protecting your password and the device where local storage may retain game data.
8. Children’s Privacy
Starshot Genesis accounts, leaderboards, and multiplayer services are intended for users 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. Steam age gates and regional ratings may also apply to Steam purchases.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Depending on your location, you may request access, correction, or deletion of personal information. You can clear browser storage for local game data. Steam purchase and account requests must generally be made through Steam. Contact us below for Happy Robot Shop–controlled Starshot Genesis account or score data.
10. International Transfers
Information may be processed in the United States and other countries where we or our providers operate.
11. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy as the game and services change. The Last Updated date shows the current version.
